1. When I was at home in Maryland last week, I appreciated reading all about the sniper trial. I didn't realize it was even going on until I went home; every day it was front-page news. Today in the C-J, the fact that John Allen Muhammad got six consecutive life terms in Maryland ("insurance in case his Virginia death sentence is overturned") was just a 3-inch blurb in national wire news. I guess if it didn't affect you directly, you don't care as much about the outcome. Just another example of how different people lead different "realities" based on where they get their news.
2. My friend Amanda posted this news article on her blog. She thinks it's extreme. I actually think it's a great idea. Impossible to implement in this country, but hey, that's what a dictatorship is good for every now and again. There's nothing worse than a smoking ban with no teeth, like the one here in Louisville. Smoking is banned in all workplaces (yay!) except bars (boo!). And Churchill Downs, of course. Hopefully the city council will realize how dumb that is and write a better ban soon. I will put Kim Jong-Il's idea away in my dictatorship file, along with mandatory reversible sterilization until parenthood worthiness is proved by classes, to be pulled out in a few years once I've taken over.
