End of an era?

I have spent 20 of my 26 years regularly attending lectures*, sitting in classrooms and lecture halls for some amount of time between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm. Would you believe I'm finally done? Yesterday was our last day of lecture; on Monday and Tuesday I have a couple group things to go to school for, but yesterday was the last time I will have sat in an auditorium for a lecture as part of a lecture-based curriculum.** It seems too good to be true! I can now look forward to sleepless shifts and standing for hours on end, as opposed to sitting in the same seat for 8 hours in a row trying not to fall asleep. Hooray for me!

To get to that point, I just need to pass finals, study full-time for 5 weeks straight (ugh, more sitting at a desk for 8 hours at a time), and take the worst test yet in my standardized test-taking career.*** I'm not really looking forward so much to that part, but June 18 (3rd year orientation) will be here soon enough!

* I'm not counting kindergarten, because even though I went to an intensive-prep Montessori kindergarten, we didn't sit in chairs facing a chalkboard. So grades 1-12, 4 years of undergrad, 2 years of grad school, and the first 2 years of med school = 20. Crazy!
** I will still have lectures to attend over the next two years, and many years more after that, but they will be parenthetically placed in a schedule of wards and rounding, instead of the focus of the curriculum.
*** Of course, each successive standardized test is the worst of my career. SATs for college, MCAT for med school, now Step 1 of the USMLE for residency. Next it will be Step 2 (OK, that one hopefully won't be so bad, as long as Step 1 goes well enough), and Step 3 to get into fellowships. I really am a glutton for punishment.

In other era-ending news, Prince William has broken up with his girlfriend, Kate Middleton. I have to confess that this is happy news for me, as I have harbored a longtime fantasy of becoming a princess. Now if only I can figure out how to meet the guy...

Of course, when you're standing for hours on end, you'll look back nostagically to those times when "all you had to do was sit in class." Time has a way of changing perspective.

But congrats on yet another milestone! Good luck on those finals!
