I was all set to have a picnic lunch on the beach today, a nice compromise to the whole hurricane's-a-comin' and no-lifeguard situation.
Then I got a phone call from a certain fiance of mine who works at a newspaper, alerting me to the fact that a syringe had been found on our very own beach.
Dammit.
Off I went anyway with my leftover Wawa turkey hoagie and a can of Coke, watching where my flip-flops landed, but I didn't see anything other than a couple of dolphins playing out past the swells (I love seeing dolphins!). After about 5 minutes, a beach patrol car came up and the guy apologetically told me the beach was closed due to medical waste washing up 10 blocks north.
Of course, then I went 10 blocks north to see if I could see anything, but there was nothing going on, other than a reporter from the local NBC affiliate doing his thing.
As of about an hour or so ago, the beaches are back open, but I've had my sun for the day.
If you haven't heard about the string of medical-waste-on-the-Jersey-shore incidents over the past week, you can catch up here:
