Pass SCHIP!

Well, I actually have mixed feelings on SCHIP -- why stop at children when you can help everyone? But I think I'm in a "something is better than nothing" mood, so there you go. I don't really understand what argument anyone has for not supporting this legislation -- sure, it costs money, but doesn't everything else? The only reason to not support it is if you believe that expanding SCHIP is a step toward universal healthcare (which I do) and you don't support universal healthcare (which I do support). But I haven't seen any evidence that President Bush fundamentally doesn't believe that universal healthcare is a good thing -- until I read the most recent issue of The New Physician, the AMSA magazine.

“I believe government cannot provide affordable health care,” President Bush told small-business owners at a health-care roundtable in July.

WHAT? I guess there's my proof, but WTF? How about the fact that I believe that insurance companies cannot provide affordable health care and that the government has already been able to provide affordable health care in the form of Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, and federal employee benefits? I'm not saying any of those programs are perfect right now (actually, my family's federal employee benefits are pretty damn awesome), but that's due to other problems with government spending. They have worked and they can work.

Besides which, I think taxing cigarette sales is a WONDERFUL idea.

So call your congressman; time is running out.

And that's the end of my universal healthcare rant #3,582

But it is very important that insurance companies make large profits. Insuring needy kids is just one step closer to depriving our corporate citizens of their rightful income. How dare you!

I love how this administration is okay with SOME vestiges of the old Soviet empire (warrantless wiretapping, torture - or something that kind of LOOKS like it, and incarcerating people without charging them - HELLO? HABEUS CORPUS, ANYBODY?) but flips out when they think we might (gasp!) consider socialized medicine. Just another reason why I am a Democrat.

I wish it was as important for physicians to make large profits as it is for insurance companies to make large profits, if anyone MUST be making unfairly large profits. Just sayin'. This whole situation never ceases to make me boiling mad!
