Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody...

...OK, that's really pathetic, and not true. But it is a good song, and ESC is off on his own tonight with the med student significant other group (he's the only significant other rather than spouse, and he's also, so far, the only guy, but neither seems to be stopping him, which impresses me), so I'm on my own. I just went shopping for the first time in forever, so I'm beat, and I might just chill at home.

Last night we celebrated my birthday by going to see the Barber of Seville, which was very good. The Kentucky Center projects English supertitles above the stage, which are key, and overall it was a great performance. I didn't realize I would recognize so much of the instrumental prelude, and of course, Figaro's first solo bit (aria??) was recognizeable as well. Before the show, we had dinner at the Bristol Bar and Grille downtown, and it was pretty good. I had read the Louisville HotBytes review before we went, and it made it sound as though their "green chile wontons" were amazing and "a part of Louisville culinary lore," so we tried them. Weren't we surprised to discover they were just jalapeno poppers! They were wrapped in a wonton skin and served with a creamy guacamole, but they were still just jalapeno poppers, so now I'm wondering why they're such a big deal. Do jalapeno poppers not exist in Louisville? Odd.

Other than that, dinner was good (and the poppers were good, too). Our entrees came with side salads (HUGE side salads!) and we each ordered a glass of wine, which were filled to the brim. It was nice, you felt like you were getting your money's worth and it was more laid-back wine drinking, like in Europe, as opposed to huge wine glasses 1/3 full -- especially since I'm not a wine connoisseur or anything. Dessert was free, thanks to a Louisville Originals birthday present (sign up for the birthday club if you click the link), and we split a white chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce. The mousse was actually the consistency of ice cream, it was so thick. Good, but I'm glad we were splitting it. And even then, we couldn't finish it.

Today was the Polar Bear Plunge, which was very fun, but also VERY cold. We wore hospital gowns and had pool toys, and it was a relatively warm 50-ish degrees today, but it didn't matter. The Ohio River is cold in February, period. Afterward, we got to sit in a warm tub (not hot!) for about 5 minutes until the next group came out of the river. Couldn't get too many good pictures, but you can see how filthy the river was making the hot tub. It was the coldest few seconds of my life; I wanted to die. Afterward, I took a hot shower until the hot water ran out :)

That's me with the closed eyes and the look of wanting to die on my face after getting out of the river.

In the warm tub, feeling much better.

Why should *you* do the Polar Bear Plunge? It raises money for the KY Special Olympics (they raised over $200,000 this year, and our med school team raised over $1,000!), you get a free long-sleeved T-shirt, a free cheeseburger from Joe's Crab Shack on the waterfront, and a free license plate frame! Plus, you'll experience the worst cold of your life and get to take a dip in the disgusting Ohio River. Come on, people, sign up next year!

As a budding doc, what kind of diseases do you think you can get from sitting in that dirty, bacteria-infested, warm water. Not that I wouldn't sit in it after a dip in the chilly H2O...

Well, my skin could tell afterward that the hot tub had been chlorinated (how I was a swimmer for so long with chlorine-sensitive skin, I don't know), so that probably killed everything I needed to worry about. For argument's sake, though, there wouldn't be too many microorganisms in the river since it's cold and flowing (as opposed to warm and stagnant), but I'm sure there are a billion and one nasty chemicals. If I grow a third ear or anything like that, I'll let you know.
